Genres and Crises - On the Bildungsroman and Speculative Fiction Genre and their (Disregarded) Capabilities to Deal with the COVID-19 Crisis

Abstract

We look at the NY Times bestseller lists and find that there are no significant changes in frequency in genre popularity surrounding the HIV/Aids crisis of the 1980s and the first Black Lives Matter movement of 2013. We consequently identify Bildungsroman and science fiction as appropriate genres for dealing with social and health crises that disproportionately affect minority groups and analyze two selected novels for their ability to do so.
